I started this blog in July 2017, as a creative outlet for me to express my love for all things, food, baking, cooking, writing and a little bit of fashion (in my own style. I do not know fashion). I am the kind of person who will simmer with excitement over simple things. Sometimes, when I see the food I love, I’ll first taste it in my head, drool alone while doing some imaginary tasting and then unleash my inner ravenous monster when I actually get there. It’s fun!
I always enjoyed baking and loved sharing pictures of my creations on Instagram with my followers. I followed mostly food & fashion/style Instagram profiles and loved the idea of using a blog and an Instagram as a way to share – a personal little online outlet, if you will. I love to write, I love to take pictures, and I love to bake. A speaking blog and Instagram felt like the perfect hobby. But how on earth do I reach here?
It all started a year ago, when I decided to open up my Instagram profile.
Today, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be able to answer some reflective questions that spanned career, work life balance, the future of everything and some of my style. Plus, can I just mention that I am lucky? or is this my hard work? I have included some of my photos and my own style.
I have been through so many takes writing an ‘About Me’ page because for some reason, it’s tough writing about yourself. It really is! I’ve had a little more success doing it Q and A style so bear with me.

Who are you? Can you share some more about how you landed here?
My name is Ching Yee. I am 25th this year.I am a full time office secret keeper and a part-time content creator. I currently split my time between my full time job and my passion to write. I am a food lover but I have a very strict control over the food I eat. My past is a nightmare to me. I have worked hard to walk out from there.
It was about a year ago, I wrote about a place and food. After that, I had built up a loyal following of readers and advertisers so I felt compelled to continue with my passion of bringing up a quality write up. I owe a big thank you to the restaurant owner!
What have been the most surprisingly positive things that you’ve experienced in your current position? What about some unexpected difficulties?
When I first started out my career with my current employer, I had no experience and no connections in the industry. Despite having received my graduate diploma in Management, I took a detour in my career early on when I decided to carry on in an industry where I had no experience at all. When many have asked if my working environment was complicating. My answer is NO. I shall say, it is a very challenging working environment. During my early stage in the company, I have encountered a lot of difficulties. It wasn’t until years later that the obstacles are actually opportunities presented to me, and of course I jumped at the chance.
I learned from the ground up with only my instincts guiding me. The turn over rates at my current position are high. I was essentially given a blank state and limited directions, which was both frightening and exhilarating at the same time. When I look back at my first couple of issues, it is with a mixture of delight and embarrassment as I work very close with senior leaders in the company. I made a lot of mistakes, but I am proud of the fact that, despite my lack of experience, I was able to grow from a very junior position into somebody who I am today.
I work and pursue success in all areas of my life. If you aim to offer value instead of taking value, people will be naturally drawn to you. You will attract more people if you provide them with an immense amount of value. Success not just about building your reputation. It is really about giving your best without holding back. Doing the best you can to change someone’s life. You know, you get to top without cutting others down.
As a little girl growing up, I used to write and compile articles, staple pieces of them together to create my own magazine, so I feel blessed to be where I am today in my career and my hobbies as my side input. To be able to combine my daily routine and fine living with my passion for social media things is a dream come true.
You have fantastic style. Can you share what a typical day and night look are for you?What are you typically doing day/night?
This is a bit funny! Thank you, I’m flattered. My style has really evolved since my weight dropped. I am much more relaxed now in my outfits. When I’m heading out for work, I will wear grey panty hose or sometimes skin colored, with black skirt and topped with a blouse and coat. Mostly in dark so that we look smart and presentable. Black, grey and neutrals are my staple colors. The truth is,I am a pretty conservative when it comes to fashion nowadays. I prefer the French attitude towards dressing these days, my style mantra is ‘easy, timeless, classic and sophificasted.’
I think real style is never right or wrong. It’s a matter of being yourself on purpose. How you carry yourself on the run.
My schedule is quite erratic. Although my working shift is quite flexible and fixed. I’m out at events or lunches on my day off, which means I’m in a short or mini skirt and Chanel espadrilles topped off with a plain t-shirt or blouse. I rarely wear blazers on my day off because of the warm weather. And I am never without at least one or two of my bracelets or watch on my wrist. I feel naked without them.
I love heels. I have more than 50 pairs of them.
Can you share a piece of life/career advice?
In my first year of working life, I struggled with low self-esteem with my career. As an assistant, it was much more difficult than I had imagined it would be to multi-tasks and meet deadlines. It was no less difficult to endure and really hard to endure and really hard to snap out of. I have an exciting career. It may seem completely illogical that I could be unhappy, and yet, there I was, crying for no reason.
What finally helped me get out from under that cloud of constant darkness was, beginning a conscious practice of gratitude. Sooner and later, I think, by holding the most significant role and is something I would recommend for anyone who wants to be happier. Life is simple, and there are many wonderful books on the subject, but of all, the concept is the same, act more confident. Push your comfort zone. Stand like an alpha. Growing up as a shy introvert with a severe speech impediment, I was bombarded with recommendations like the ones above regarding how to meet more people and make more friends.
I have tried them all over the years and I have come to the conclusion that it is a lot easier to be kind than it is to try to always act confident. Be yourself. No matter how difficult things may seem, there is always something to be grateful for. The more grateful you are, the more you will feel notice all the wonderful things in your life, and the more good things will seemingly appear out of no where. The best side effect of practicing gratitude, however, is that you will inevitably become a happier person. You really can change your life, just by changing your attitude.
What are some of your passions and hobbies?
I do not have a lot of free time these days, but if I did it would be spent travelling, reading, working out, baking or expanding my very limited cooking repertoire. I am a true travel junkie and can spend hours browsing on Google for trips. I’d make a good travel agent if I weren’t doing what I do.
I am also involved in a few charities and the one I am most passionate about is Child Sponsorship by Worldvision Malaysia. Worldvision supports the work by raising funds that go directly to building child protection centers in rural and poverty-stricken areas.
What beauty products should every girl have?
Simplifying your beauty routine can be hard. We are conditioned by magazines and advertising, made to feel guilty if we don’t use certain body and beauty treatments, manipulated into believing that the more costly a product, the better its results.
My vanity table is completely covered with skincare, make-up, perfume and jewellery. As we got older, the skincare products got more expensive, with promises of anti-ageing and rare ingredients, and we got more anxious about our wrinkles and sun spots.
Now I hate that the beauty industry preys on vulnerabilities and makes people feel like we need certain products to feel like beautiful. As I got older, I realised that I didn’t want to go down the same path. I do not want to depend so heavily on expensive creams.
Over the years I’ve accumulated a number of products which I didn’t love but am now in the process of reducing. I know that certain products have an expiry date but I’m using up what I can so long as I don’t have a bad reaction to it. My goal is to have no duplicates or unnecessary products, just a simple skincare routine using affordable, cruelty-free products, which are suitable to my skin.
Why did you start ChingYee Writes?
When I think about why I started to blog, my old answer was the usual answer: to have an online outlet for me to vent and release my angsty teenage emotions turned into one of the best things of my life.
Yes, there was that, but in all honesty, I started a “fitness blog”, just to brag a little to my friends. It started as just that. Back then my blog was just a few pages on the internet with some cut and paste from my collection and a few crappy pictures. But boy was I proud to show it off! And in that particular point in time, it never crossed my mind to even imagine it would come to this. To me, it was just showing off to a select few friends and that was that. If you’ve followed my blog over the year or have read ‘ Why ChingYee Writes? ’, you’ll know the rest of the story. If you haven’t here’s the cliff notes version.
And then something magical happened. People starting dropping me messages. And I loved that feeling. So I kept on going.
After I started ChingYee Writes and it evolved, the recognition I wanted to see in peoples faces is now there. Now they understand. And it makes me happy. So that’s how ChingYee Writes (the blog formerly knows as The Wallflower Speaks) was born.
Can you share with us some underrated local food places in KL without burning a hole in the wallet?
Bills, clothes, rent—There are a lot of things to pay for when you become an adult. There’s no way around it . We guess what we’re trying to say is that while there are some expenses that you just can’t avoid paying for.
Stick to your budget with ease by checking out these places that you can enjoy your dinner for under RM50 (not including alcohol). Keep in mind this is not a complete list but just a sampling of where you’ll find a nice mixture of ambiance, wait service and, most important, good food.
